The awards emphasize the quality of the wines produced but also the overall visitor experience, including vineyard tours, hospitality, architecture, and local culture. The rankings are determined by an international panel of wine experts, sommeliers, and influential figures from the wine industry who vote to select the top 50 wineries that stand out for their exceptional contributions to the wine industry.

The Dr. Loosen Experience
The Dr. Loosen Estate
The Dr. Loosen wine estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst “Erni” Loosen took over the winery in 1988, he had already made numerous trips to the world’s most prestigious wineries. He wanted to discover the secret of truly great wines in order to make world-class wines himself. These journeys of discovery inspired Erni’s own wine philosophy: great wines are an authentic expression of the soil, the climate, and the vines themselves.
After Erni assumed ownership of the estate, he recognized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of the Mosel Valley’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create world-class wines that reflect their unique terroir.
The Elements of Quality at Dr. Loosen
- Cool Regional Climate – The Mosel’s climate and steep, south-facing slopes create ideal conditions for Riesling. With optimal exposure to the low-lying, northern sun, full flavor development is assured. The cool climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, while retaining bright acidity.
- Distinctive Slate Soil – The region’s stony soil and rocky outcroppings reflect sunlight and hold in heat, creating ideal vineyard climates, which ensures excellent ripeness. Thin, rocky topsoil forces the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, producing vibrant wines that capture the strong mineral character of the soil.
- Old, Ungrafted Vines – In it’s best sites, Dr. Loosen has vines that are up to 150 years old, on original rootstock. Old vines produce wines that are naturally more concentrated and expressive of their terroir.
